If you’re creative and have artistic talent, a career in multimedia art may be a good fit for you. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that multimedia artists and animators produce graphics, animation and visual effects for television, movies, video games and other media.

Multimedia artists often create two-dimensional and three-dimensional images by using computer animation or modeling programs, as explained by MyNextMove.org.  They frequently have to rely on independent judgment, creativity and computer equipment. These skilled workers make animations seem lifelike through the manipulation of light, color, texture, shadow, transparency or static images.

The BLS lists the following important qualities of multimedia artists.

Artistic talent. While knowing how to manipulate color, texture, light, and other aspects is important, artists must be able to use their talent to overcome imperfections.

Communication skills. Multimedia artists often work as a part of a team and must be able to communicate clearly with others.

Computer skills. Computer programs are often used to complete projects.

Creativity. Multimedia artists and animators should be able to produce creative and original ideas. They should also be able to find ways to implement their ideas.

Time-management skills. Most companies require artists and animators to meet tight deadlines, and so they must be able to manage their time wisely.

Education

To enter this profession, you usually need to have a bachelor’s degree, according to the BLS. Common college majors for multimedia artists and animators include fine art, computer graphics, and animation.  Some colleges have specialized programs that offer classes focused on specific topics such as interactive media or game design.

Fine art programs usually require coursework in painting, drawing and sculpture. Computer graphics programs often require classes in graphics and computer science, such as computer programming. Animation programs typically include course in drawing, animation, and film.

Employers look for job candidates who have a strong portfolio of their artistic work. In addition, employers prefer candidates who have developed technical skills, as noted by the BLS.
